Sleep and Dreaming Can Reduce Stress

Quite often the dream is always underestimated and people often call it a flower bed that useless. When in fact the dream could have been useful, especially for those who need peace of mind/emotional. Dream itself is a sleep phase which is often called REM (Rapid Eye Movement).

Scientists from the University of California have conducted a study that linked the relationship between dreams and emotional tranquility. Researchers assessed, dreams can overcome inner turmoil.

These study of dreams involve approximately 35 adults in good health, they are then divided into two groups. All participants were then shown 150 pictures of emotional twice a day (every 12 hours), while MRI scanners to monitor their brain activity.

In the first group, they were shown pictures in the morning and afternoon, during the morning until late afternoon they had to stay awake. While the pictures shown in the second group during the afternoon, the two new pictures are shown next morning or after they sleep.

From this research note that the participants who took time to sleep (before seeing the second picture), has reduced a significant emotional reaction when shown the second picture.

From the MRI scan is also known that the activity of sleep can cause a decrease in amygdala reactivity, part of the brain that controls emotions. Researchers also revealed that during sleep, a sense of stress can be reduced.

“Dreams can provide an overnight therapy, can be soothing and can eliminate the emotions experienced before bedtime,” said Professor Matthew Walker as quoted by the Daily Mail.

Professor Walker also added that sleep and dreaming can soften a person’s emotional strength. This scientific study itself has been published in The Journal Current Biology.
